Does ChatGPT Know About My Business? Test It in 10 Minutes
The 3-question self-test
You do not need software to find out whether AI knows your business. You need 10 minutes and three tools: ChatGPT with web browsing turned on, Google Gemini, and Perplexity. Ask each one the same three questions:
- Question 1 — direct: "What do you know about [your business name] in San Antonio?" This tests whether the engines have any record of you at all.
- Question 2 — category + area: "Who are the best [HVAC companies / med-spas / family law firms] near [Stone Oak / the Pearl / Alamo Heights]?" This tests whether you show up when a buyer does not already know your name.
- Question 3 — hire intent: "I need to hire a [your category] in San Antonio. Who do you recommend and why?" This tests recommendation and sentiment — the answer that actually moves revenue.
Why does the same test run on three engines? Because they pull from different indexes. ChatGPT's search-grounded answers run against the Bing index — if your site is not indexed in Bing, ChatGPT cannot cite it, no matter how well you rank in Google. Roughly 1 in 3 U.S. adults now uses an AI chatbot at least weekly (Pew Research via iQDigital, 2026), so what these engines say about you is a real sales channel, not a curiosity.
Write down each answer verbatim. You are about to sort them into one of four states.
What are the four outcome states?
Every San Antonio business lands in one of these four buckets. For reference on how common the weaker states are: our Houston AI Visibility Index study measured a metro-wide median AIR Score of 31/100 — half of the Houston businesses we measured scored below 31.
- State 1 — Invisible. The engines have never heard of you, or confuse you with a similarly named business elsewhere. A Stone Oak dental office with a five-year-old template site and no schema markup typically lands here.
- State 2 — Partial. The engines know your name and maybe your city, but cannot say what you do, who you serve, or why anyone should pick you. Question 1 gets a vague answer; Questions 2 and 3 skip you entirely.
- State 3 — Outdated. The engines describe your old address, discontinued services, or a former owner. Common after a rebrand, a move, or an acquisition — think a New Braunfels HVAC shop that relocated up the I-35 corridor two years ago and still gets described at the old location.
- State 4 — Cited. The engines name you, describe you accurately, and recommend you in category queries with a reason. This is the target. Our Houston study's 31/100 median suggests cited status is uncommon in that market — which is exactly the opportunity.
Why is my business invisible to ChatGPT?
Invisibility almost always traces to one of three root causes:
- You are not in the Bing index. ChatGPT's web answers are grounded in Bing. Most local businesses submit a sitemap to Google Search Console and stop. If Bing Webmaster Tools has never seen your site, ChatGPT is answering blind.
- Your site has no machine-readable structure. AI engines lean hard on structured data. FAQ-schema content is cited roughly 3x more often in Google AI Overviews (iQDigital, 2026). A site that is all images and vague taglines gives the engines nothing to quote.
- You have thin organic presence overall. 71.7% of ChatGPT citations come from pages that already have organic search presence (GrowingAI, 2026). AI visibility is built on top of a real content footprint, not instead of one. If your entire web presence is a homepage and a Facebook page, there is nothing for an engine to cite.
The partial state has the same causes at lower severity: the engines found your name in a directory or two, but your own site never told them the rest of the story. For the full mechanics, see why isn't my business showing up in ChatGPT.
Why does ChatGPT have outdated information about my business?
The outdated state has a different root cause: staleness. AI engines weight freshness heavily. Pages untouched for roughly 90 days see measurably fewer AI citations (iQDigital, 2026). If your site last changed in 2023, the engines are working from a snapshot of a business that may no longer exist in that form.
Outdated answers also come from inconsistent citations across the web. If your Google Business Profile says one address, an old Yelp listing says another, and your site says a third, the engines pick one — and it is often the wrong one. An Alamo Heights law office that moved offices and never cleaned up its old directory listings will keep getting described at the old address for years.
The fix is unglamorous but mechanical: update the site, align every major listing to one name-address-phone, and give the engines fresh, dated content that supersedes the stale record. Freshness is a maintenance discipline, not a one-time project — which is why our services run month-to-month rather than as a one-off audit.
The 30-day fix sequence
Whatever state you landed in, the first 30 days look the same. This is the sequence we run:
- Days 1-3: Submit sitemaps to both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that unlocks ChatGPT citations. Verify indexing, not just submission.
- Days 3-7: Publish an llms.txt file. It is a plain-text file at your site root that tells AI crawlers what your business is, what you do, and which pages matter. Cheap to build, and it removes ambiguity for every engine that reads it.
- Days 7-21: Add FAQ schema to your core service pages. Write real questions your customers ask, with complete answers, marked up in structured data. Recall the 3x citation lift for FAQ-schema content in AI Overviews (iQDigital, 2026) — this is the highest-leverage content work on the list.
- Days 14-30: Align your citations and refresh your key pages. One consistent name, address, and phone everywhere. Updated dates on your money pages. A page that clearly answers "who is this business, where, and for whom."
Days 30 and beyond are about compounding: answer-format content, ongoing freshness, and measurement. That is where AI visibility diverges from traditional SEO.
Why San Antonio businesses should run this test now
San Antonio's population hit roughly 1,513,974 in 2025, up 9.3% since the 2020 Census, and the city added 23,945 residents in a single year — the 4th-most of any U.S. city (U.S. Census Bureau via Axios San Antonio, 2025). Roughly 53,000 small businesses operate in Bexar County (Bexar County Small Business and Entrepreneurship Dept). That is a lot of new buyers asking AI engines for recommendations, and a lot of businesses competing for a handful of AI answer slots.
Meanwhile, Google AI Overviews now appear in roughly half of Google searches (D&D SEO Services, 2026), and demand for this discipline is exploding — "AI SEO" searches are up 84% year over year and "generative engine optimization" is up 309% (Google Keyword Planner via SEO Strategy study). A few San Antonio SEO shops have added AEO pages, but no local player has published a measured AI visibility index for the market. We are building one: the San Antonio AI Visibility Index.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check what ChatGPT says about my business?
Open ChatGPT with web browsing enabled and ask three questions: your business name directly, your category plus your neighborhood, and a hire-intent question like "who should I hire for HVAC in San Antonio?" Repeat the same three questions in Gemini and Perplexity, since each engine pulls from a different index. Record the answers verbatim and sort yourself into one of four states: invisible, partial, outdated, or cited.
Why does ChatGPT know some San Antonio businesses but not mine?
Three usual causes: your site is not in the Bing index (ChatGPT's search answers are grounded in Bing), your pages lack structured data like FAQ schema, or your overall organic footprint is thin. GrowingAI (2026) found 71.7% of ChatGPT citations come from pages that already have organic search presence. Competitors who get named usually have all three fundamentals in place.
ChatGPT describes my old address or old services. How do I fix that?
That is the outdated state, and it comes from stale pages and conflicting listings. Update your website, align your name, address, and phone across every major directory, and publish fresh, dated content that supersedes the old record. Engines weight freshness: pages untouched around 90 days see measurably fewer AI citations (iQDigital, 2026), so this is ongoing maintenance, not a one-time fix.
What is llms.txt and do I actually need it?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at your site root that tells AI crawlers what your business is, what you offer, and which pages matter most. It is not a magic ranking switch, but it removes ambiguity for engines trying to summarize you, and it takes under a day to build. In our 30-day fix sequence it sits alongside the higher-impact steps: Bing indexing and FAQ schema.
Does being invisible to ChatGPT actually cost me customers?
The usage data says yes. Roughly 1 in 3 U.S. adults uses an AI chatbot at least weekly (Pew Research via iQDigital, 2026), and Google AI Overviews appear in about half of Google searches (D&D SEO Services, 2026). When those answers recommend three competitors and skip you, buyers never reach the comparison stage. For scale of the problem: our Houston AI Visibility Index study found a metro-wide median AIR Score of just 31/100 — half of the Houston businesses we measured scored below 31.
How long until AI engines pick up my fixes?
Indexing changes (Google and Bing sitemap submissions) can register within days. Structural changes like FAQ schema and llms.txt typically show effects over weeks as engines recrawl. Correcting outdated information takes longest because stale records persist across directories. Plan on 30 days for the foundation and 60-90 days to see movement in what the engines actually say — which is why we re-scan on a schedule rather than once.
